3. Collecting and Using Your Personal Data

3.1 Information You Give Us

While using the App, we may ask you to provide certain personally identifiable information, categorised as follows:

Required to create an account:

  • A username and a display name, which other members can see.
  • A password, which is stored only in a hashed form that we cannot reverse.
  • Contact information, an email address or a phone number, so that your account can be verified and recovered. See clause 4.

Optional, and only if you choose to add them:

  • A profile photo and a short bio.
  • A town or region, shown on your public profile.
  • Your date of birth, gender, height and weight, used to make distance, pace and calorie estimates more accurate for your body.
  • Your preferred units (metric or imperial) and the activities that interest you.

3.2 Usage and Device Data

Usage Data is collected automatically and may include:

  • Type and model of mobile device used
  • Mobile device unique ID
  • Mobile device IP address
  • Mobile device operating system and App version
  • Device language, locale and time zone
  • A push notification token, if you allow notifications

3.3 Information Collected While Using the App

With your prior permission, requested at the time of use, we collect:

  • Your location, including while the App is running in the background or your screen is off during activity tracking and live events, in order to record your route and distance and to display your position on the event leaderboard. The App asks for this permission and explains why before, and tracking only ever runs while a session is recording.
  • Step counts from your device's built-in motion sensor, used to improve distance accuracy and to keep counting steps between sessions.

Activity Data is used solely to provide the App's fitness-tracking, challenge, leaderboard and event features, and to show you your own history. We do not use Activity Data for advertising or marketing, and we do not sell, rent, or otherwise disclose it to advertising platforms or data brokers.

If you decline location access, the App still works: sessions record time and estimated steps and distance, and you can use every other part of the Service. If you decline motion access, distance and calories are estimated from GPS and your profile instead.

3.4 Community Content

If you join or create a group, we store your membership and the messages you send in that group's chat. If you join a challenge, register for an event, or appear on a leaderboard, we store your entry and your result.

3.5 User Reports and Blocking

User Reports. Just as you can report other members, other members or third parties may also choose to report to us your interactions and your messages with them or others on our Services; for example, to report possible violations of our Terms of Use or policies. When a report is made, we collect information on both the reporting member and the reported member.

The information we collect in a report includes the reason given, the account reported, the group or message the report was raised from, a copy of the reported content, and the time the report was made. Where a report concerns a group chat, the copy we retain may include messages sent by members other than the one reported, because a message read on its own is often not enough to judge what happened.

Blocking. When you block another member, we store the block so that it keeps working across your devices and after you sign in again. A block is applied on our servers as well as in the App, so the member you blocked can no longer see or contact you through the Service. We do not tell the member that you blocked them.

We use the information collected in reports and blocks to review what was reported, to decide whether our Terms of Use were broken, to act on that decision, and to detect members who repeatedly evade blocks or suspensions. We may keep a record of a report and the action taken after the reported content is deleted, so that the measure remains effective and so we can respond if the decision is appealed.

4. Verifying Your Email Address and Phone Number

To confirm that a contact detail belongs to you, we may send a one-time code to the email address or phone number you provide and ask you to enter it in the App. The code is short-lived and can be used once. We record which contacts have been verified, and when.

We do this for a small number of specific reasons:

  • To make impersonation harder. Usernames and display names are self-chosen, and a verified contact is what stops one person from repeatedly creating accounts in someone else's name after being reported or blocked.
  • To let you get back in. A verified contact is the only way we can safely return an account to its owner if a password is lost.
  • To protect other members. When we act on a report, a verified contact is what makes a suspension meaningful rather than something the same person can walk around in a minute.
  • To secure sign-in. We may ask for a one-time code when you sign in, in addition to your password.

We may require a verified phone number in order to create an account or to continue using one, and we may require a one-time code at sign-in. Which of these apply can change over time as we adjust our security measures, and may differ between accounts and releases of the App. Where a verified phone number is required, the App will tell you before you can continue, and you can always sign out.

Your phone number and email address are used for verification, security, account recovery and service messages about your account. We do not sell them, we do not disclose them to advertisers, and we do not display them to other members. Codes sent by SMS are delivered through a messaging provider acting on our behalf, and your mobile network's standard message rates may apply.

5. Use of Your Personal Data

The Company may use Personal Data for the following purposes:

  • To provide and maintain the Service.
  • To manage your Account.
  • To provide a personalized in-app experience.
  • To verify that a contact detail belongs to you, and to secure sign-in, as described in clause 4.
  • To detect, prevent and respond to fraud, automated abuse, impersonation and manipulated activity data.
  • To review reports about members or groups, and to enforce our Terms of Use.
  • To contact you, if you have provided an email or phone number.
  • To provide app updates, news, special offers, and general information.
  • To manage your requests.
  • For business transfers.
  • For other purposes, such as data analysis and improving the Service.

6. Sharing Your Personal Data

We may share your Personal Data in the following situations:

  • With Service Providers who operate the Service on our behalf: our hosting and database provider; the messaging provider that delivers one-time codes by SMS; the provider that delivers email; Apple and Google.
  • For business transfers, in connection with a merger, sale, or acquisition.
  • With Affiliates, who will be required to honor this Privacy Policy.
  • With other users, through the community space of the App, or through the live leaderboard during fitness events you join (e.g. the community run), where your entered name, category, and live results may be visible to other participants and viewers.
  • With your consent, for any other purpose.

7. Analytics and Diagnostics

We use a product analytics and error-monitoring service to understand how the App is used, to see which features work, and to find and fix crashes.

We do not use this data for advertising, we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not use Apple's advertising identifier.

8. Retention of Your Personal Data

We retain your Personal Data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy:

  • Account information is retained for as long as your account is active, plus up to 6 months after account closure and deleted thereafter.
  • Activity Data (GPS routes, distance, steps and estimates) is retained for as long as your account is active; deleted upon account deletion, subject to the 30-day retention window described below.
  • Community Content is retained for as long as your account is active. A message you have sent may remain visible in a group's history after you leave that group.
  • Records of reports, blocks and enforcement action are retained for as long as needed to keep the measure effective and to handle any appeal.
  • Usage/device data and server logs are retained up to 6 months, for security and troubleshooting.

9. Deletion of Your Personal Data

You can delete your data within the App, from your profile's account settings. Doing so will terminate your account. Your Personal Data will remain on our servers for 30 days following deletion, solely as a safety measure in case you choose to return within that period, in which case your account and existing data will be restored. However, should you not return, your data is permanently deleted after the 30-day window.

10. Request of Your Personal Data

You have the right to request a copy of the Personal Data we hold about you. Where you have provided an email address, we will send this to you within 72 hours of your request.

11. Your Choices and Device Permissions

You remain in control of what the App may access:

  • Location and motion access can be granted or withdrawn at any time in your device's settings. Withdrawing them limits tracking accuracy but does not close your account or remove your history.
  • Notifications can be turned off in your device's settings. The App works without them.
  • Profile details other than your username and a verified contact are optional and can be edited or emptied at any time.
  • You can block another member, and report a member or a group, from the App.
  • You can delete your account, and with it your data, as described in clause 9.

12. Disclosure of Your Personal Data

12.1 Business Transactions

If the Company is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your Personal Data may be transferred. We will provide notice before your Personal Data is transferred and becomes subject to a different Privacy Policy.

12.2 Law Enforcement

The Company may be required to disclose your Personal Data if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.

13. Security of Your Personal Data

The security of your Personal Data is important to us, but no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we use commercially reasonable measures to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14. Children's Privacy

You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service, and you must meet any higher minimum age set by the law of your country. Our Service does not address anyone under this age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under it. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us so we can remove it and close the account.

15. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date above.
